Finding out I am pregnant and Check-up Costs in Japan

Finding out I am Pregnant and Check-up Costs in Japan

Boom! Finding out I am pregnant is the most ecstatic moment in my life. I somehow planned and even wrote it in my diary that I will get pregnant in my late 20`s. So how did I learned about it? Sometime about October 2014 I feel very different. We were on a trip at Osaka then. I feel like peeing every now and then but there`s no pee coming out! I asked my mother about it but she told me maybe I will have my menstruation already. But the feeling keeps on coming back every now and then. So after our 3 day trip in Osaka. My husband told me that he thinks I am pregnant. I bought a pregnancy kit by the way I am just 3 days delay by then. Hep hep hooray yes! you are right. One pregnancy kit two lines as a result. Oh yes I am pregnant !!! First thing I remember was going to my doctor. I told her about my condition and she did a transvaginal ultrasound and we saw a small spot and she told me its still blood yet and its not a baby yet. Anyways I am 5 weeks by that time. She asked me if I will continue it or not. Here in Japan they respect a woman`s choice if she wants to continue or terminate her pregnancy. I told her of course I will continue it. Then the next thing we checked was where will I give birth. You should reserve in your desired hospital as early as possible because hospitals tend to have lots of patients. My doctor was suggesting since we are from Aoba-ku a hospital nearby. But my husband wants me to give birth in Showa Hospital because the wife of his colleague gave birth there. Being a good wife and this is my first time I agreed. We went there for other check ups without even asking how much will be the cost of birth there. I asked my Japanese friends at work if its nice to give birth to Showa Hospital. And they asked me why is your pregnancy delicate? Showa Hospital is for women who have delicate pregnancy. And I replied No. So they told me to look for other hospitals because Showa is quite expensive. I told my husband about it and for the next check up we asked the reception how much is the birth cost there? She replied the starting rate is 720,000 yen. Well thats the starting rate. I told my husband no way it is really expensive. And the government will just give us 420,000 yen for support. After that we went to the hospital wherein my doctor advised me to go to. The name is Aoba Women`s Hospital. It does not look like a hospital because it is not that big but they really specializes in giving birth and children. So we asked about their services and charges, their starting price is 570,000 for normal delivery. Good thing there is still one slot left for those who will give birth in June. What we did is we pay for the deposit right away to have the slot. Okay it is getting longer already. Here are the costs of my check-up from the first to third trimester. It may vary from other hospitals. So here it is just to give you an idea:

My doctor gave me a schedule and for the first trimester I need to go for at least once a month. I can go to my doctor until 24 weeks then transfer to Aoba Women’s Hospital. For there second trimester at least once every two weeks and for the last trimester it is once a week.

1st trimester costs:

10/7/2014 Minami Ladies Clinic     2,440円

10/18/2014 Showa Hospital           1,660 円

11/7/2014 I am 8 weeks already Showa Hospital 300 円 originally it is 7,300 円 but we use the coupon given by the government so it is less 7,000 円 I just did the normal check and transvaginal ultrasound.

11/20/2014 12 weeks Minami Ladies Clinic Had blood test and check up routine 3,150 円 originally at 15,150 円 used the coupon costs 12,000 円

12/04/2014 16 weeks 4,350 円 used the coupon= 12,000円 total should be 16,350 円

2nd trimester:

12/25/2014 16 weeks 1,000 円 used 4,700円coupon total should be 5,950円

1/23/2015 20 weeks   1,000 円 used 4,700円 = 5,950円

2/12/2015                   4,090 円 used 4700円 =   8,790円

3/3/2015                     2,010円    used 4,700円=    6,710円

3/9/2015  Showa Hospital

                Glucose Test 2,500円

                Fetus exact sonography 3,000 円

                 Total: 5,500 円 less 4,700 = 800円

28 weeks: 1,000円

30 weeks: 9,390円- 4,700= 4,690円 (contents, anemia, blood clotting)

32 weeks: 12,000円-4,700=7,300円

36 weeks: 23,000円-4,700=18,300円 (anemia, blood clotting sonography, examination of vaginal secretion)

38 weeks: NST 7,200円-4,700=2,500円

Gave birth at 39 weeks 3 days 🙂

I hope it gave you an idea somehow on the check up costs here in Japan.

Please feel free to leave a comment or send an e-mail if you have other questions.

My experience in giving birth and childbirth costs in Japan

My experience in giving birth and childbirth costs in Japan:

Giving birth is the most painful feeling I have ever experienced my entire life but seeing my son makes the pain all worth it! After pushing and pushing and shouting at the top of my lungs I gave birth last 31st of May 2015 10:30 in the evening at Aoba Women`s Hospital. I was rushed in the hospital at about 2 in the morning since my water broke. Instead of giving birth on the schedule date which is 4th day of June I gave birth a little bit early. I was in the hospital Sunday early morning and gave birth at the same day 10:30 in the evening. I felt the contractions at about 2 in the afternoon. Those were non stop oh my! I can still remember it and what  I felt during that time. I even pooped because I cannot tolerate the pain anymore. Oh well, here is the exact figures of how much we spent during my stay in the hospital which is from May 31st until 4th of June 2015. Me and my husband decided to have a private room, there is an additional cost for that and giving birth on a holiday is another additional cost. We decided to not have epidural since we have to pay an additional 100,000円 for that.

Aoba Women`s Hospital is a very nice and clean hospital. And their food is superb! Very delicious! I enjoyed the course meal, massage and make up before going home. And the service deluxe of riding a rolls  royce. 🙂

Anyway if you plan to stay on the ward no additional costs, 2 persons in a room +5,000yen/day, for private room its 10,000yen/day and private room with bathroom its 15,000 yen/day.

We chose to have the private room without the bathroom.

Here is the cost of my birth in Aoba Women`s Hospital:

Normal Delivery: 573,690 円

neonatal hearing test:     3,240

room charge:   45,000

holiday/midnight additional

cost:   30,000________

Total: 651,930円

less:

reservation fee:   50,000円

deposit fee:     50,000円

lump-sum from government 420,000円

                                           ________________

less:                                      520,000円

total Balance: 131,930円

The things the hospital required me to bring  during my stay there are the following:

Inside my maternity bag:

Washing/face tools:

toothbrush set

mug/cup

hand towel

hair brush, facial, lotion, etc

slippers

pajamas (2)

face towel

bath towel

napkins

postpartum shorts/panties

brassiere for women

pelvic belt

clean cotton

breast pads

wet tissue

tissue

watch/clock

For discharge:

baby clothes, swaddling clothes, baby underwear etc

baby wipes

newborn diapers

writing instrument

seal/inkan

hospitalization baggage check

Almost were provided by the hospital even for my son. They gave me a big bag wherein all the necessary items are there and another bag for my son. They also gave me a VS shower set and we also bought pictures of our new born son there. It was so nice because they put it on display beside the nursery room. There are digital photo frames displayed wherein you can see a slide show pictures of your newborn!

All in all it was a fabulous experience to give birth in Aoba Women`s hospital. If ever I will give birth again I will still choose this hospital. And there will an additional discount if ever I plan to give birth here. 🙂

Thank you once again for reading and feel free to leave a comment or send me an e-mail!

Take care mommies!

What its like to be a wife of an inspiring Entrepreneur in Japan

What its like to be a wife of an Inspiring Entrepreneur in Japan.

Many articles have been written about the experiences of being an entrepreneur. The trials, hardships and sacrifices of being an entrepreneur. But I am not an entrepreneur yet so for the mean time I want to share with you my experiences as the wife of an inspiring entrepreneur.

Back in the year 2013, I went home in the Philippines for a 2 week vacation. My husband just stayed here in Japan because of work. While enjoying my vacation in my hometown. Me and my mother went to Cebu and Bohol to appreciate Chocolate Hills, Tarsier and the old Churches. While in Bohol I received a message from my sister. She asked me “What happened to —?” I said what do you mean what happened? I have no wifi connection at that time. Me and my husband only exchange few messages when I have connection so I really don`t know what my sister is talking about. Then I received the news that my husband`s migraine is getting worse. He`s been absent from work for two days. And as a practice here in Japan if you`ve been absent for two days or more you have to present a medical certificate. My husband has been experiencing migraine since then but this time it was different he told me. Upon coming back in Japan I learned that he resigned  from work already. I was furious at first because he did not even notify me about his decision. I don`t know what`s wrong but his boss is nice and he even likes his work. Then, he told me he wanted to start his own business. I asked why ? He told me he is not getting any younger

and does not want to be an employee anymore. Even though I do not agree with his decision I cannot do anything because he told me that is what he really wanted. there are fears and many questions in my mind but I just prayed and ask the Lord for guidance.

December 2013, JC Studios was initiated. We used our wedding gift as the capital of the business. First few months it is a trial and error process. It didn’t hit me so hard that time because I have a work of my own while my husband is looking for possible clients. Luckily his former bosses supported him and still give him projects not as their employee but as their partner. The Japanese bosses of my husband were so supportive and helpful up to now. They are proud of him because once they were also like my husband.  My husband did not give up looking for clients and also doing side jobs so he can still earn during that time. I tell you it is not all sunshine and rainbows being with a person who is starting his own business. There are times when I told him just to give up and it is easier to be an employee at least there is a monthly fixed income and no need to worry about where to get payments for our bills. But my husband even for a second did not think of giving up. I can see the love for what he is doing and first time in my life I see this in a person. He will drive for long hours just to capture beautiful sceneries or just to appreciate the nature.

October 2014 this is the most happiest day of our lives since we learned that I am pregnant. Fear came rushing once again. Thinking where will we get the payment for hospital bills. I am happy and nervous at the same time. You cannot blame me since this is very new to me. I am a worrier even with the littlest thing. Never did I saw my husband afraid of what will happen. He just told me do not worry I got this. After giving birth I did not work anymore and took care of our son. Lots of fights happened between the two of us. Financial, emotional but no physical fights. lol There are times we received notification of not paying these bills at the right time. Not only once but a few times. Experienced having our phone lines cut and our gas too one time. These are the struggles and hardships we experienced so far. I adore my husband that when it comes to our son he always have everything especially his time. He got to play with our son, take care of him, laugh with him. All these memories cannot be exchange with all the wealth in this world.

Business is still running up to now (Thank God!). There are still sacrifices to be made, we still need to see our profits but being a wife of an inspiring entrepreneur takes a lot of courage, patience and understanding especially when times get a really tougher. Just hold on and think that the best things are yet to come! 🙂
